Young people said that they had high expectations in the White Paper, especially in areas such as information, anti-discrimination, equal opportunities for young disabled people, formal and non-formal education, employment and social inclusion as well as participation in exchange programmes, demographic change in Europe and the participation of young people in society.

Adoption of the European Pact for Youth by the Spring 2005 European Council[1], as part of the revised Lisbon Strategy focussing on growth and jobs, is a recognition that integrating young people in society and working life, and making better use of their potential, are essential for ensuring a return to sustained and sustainable growth in Europe.

As part of their overall mission to prepare young people for society and the labour market, as well as to support them in achieving personal fulfilment, education and training have an important role to play in helping young people to become media literate and responsible citizens of the future.

Invites Armenia and Turkey to use examples of successful reconciliation between European nations and to focus on an agenda that puts cooperation between peoples first; trusts that this will contribute to the historic reconciliation of the Armenian and Turkish people in a spirit of truth and respect; supports civil society initiatives between Turkey and Armenia working towards the normalisation of relations; urges Turkey and Armenia to proceed to a normalisation of their relations by ratifying and implementing, without preconditions, the protocols on the establishment of diplomatic relations, by opening the border and by actively improving their relations, with particular reference to cross-border cooperation and economic integration;

Stresses that the social economy – and mutual societies in particular – plays an essential role in the EU economy, by combining profitability with solidarity, creating high-quality jobs, local jobs, strengthening social, economic and regional cohesion, generating social capital and promoting active citizenship, solidarity - based social welfare and a type of economy with democratic values which puts people first and supports sustainable development and social, environmental and technological innovation;

No doubt the Commission has the noblest intentions, but, looked at from the viewpoint of the workers and the least advantaged people, it still has not answered the questions this Parliament has raised in many documents, for example, the report on the Green Paper entitled “Living and Working in the Information Society: People First”. We still do not have much idea of who is going to finance the massive programme to teach basic digital literacy which Europe needs to close the gap with the United States.
