I attended the Business Forum sessions in both Belo Horizonte, Brazil and San José.

Calls on the partners to pursue joint initiatives and to hold more frequent social forums bringing together the business world, workers, consumers and civil society, on the one hand at the level of the EU and Latin America as such and on the other within the different countries; calls on the European Economic and Social Committee to intensify its activities in this area and to pass on its experience to the Latin American partners; in this connection, welcomes the positive contributions made by the Civil Society Forums meeting alongside the Summits;

Notes the increasing presence of Chinese and Indian business leaders at the World Economic Forum, which brings home the necessity of improving Europe's competitiveness through implementation of the Lisbon modernising agenda, and of developing closer relationships with the EU's trading partners in Asia and South America as well as with the US in order to complete the transatlantic market by 2015 and to replace the New Transatlantic Agenda with a Transatlantic Partnership Agreement to be implemented from 2007;
4. constate la participation croissante au Forum économique mondial de chefs d'entreprise chinois et indiens, ce qui implique une nécessité d'améliorer la compétitivité de l'Europe en mettant en œuvre l'agenda de modernisation de Lisbonne et de développer des relations plus étroites avec les partenaires commerciaux de l'UE en Asie et en Amérique du Sud, ainsi qu'avec les États-Unis afin d'achever la mise en place du marché transatlantique d'ici 2015 et de substituer au nouvel agenda transatlantique un accord de partenariat transatlantique à mettre en œuvre à partir de 2007;

34. Supports the launch of an EU-Latin American business forum bringing together representatives from employer organisations and small, medium-sized and large enterprises in Europe and Latin America with the aim of promoting trade and attracting all kinds of investment to both regions;

Mr. Peter Bakvis: Parallel forums were held, particularly for the ministerial summit which took place in Belo Horizonte in Brazil, in May of 1997, which was in preparation for the heads of State and government summit that took place in April of 1998 in Santiago, where there was also a parallel summit.
