As regards world problems, priority should be given to matters of the new relationship between science and society and to specific problems which require the mobilisation of research efforts throughout the world: infectious diseases related to poverty, biodiversity, new forms of energy, the digital divide, climate change, food safety, etc. European integrated projects or the pooling of national research programmes will be particularly appropriate for these issues, with third country research staff and institutions involved as associates.
En ce qui concerne les problématiques globales, une priorité est à donner aux questions concernant les nouvelles relations entre science et société, de même qu'à quelques problèmes qui requièrent une mobilisation des efforts de recherche au niveau mondial : maladies infectieuses liées à la pauvreté, biodiversité, nouvelles formes d'énergie, fracture numérique, changement climatique, sûreté alimentaire,.Pour ces sujets, les projets intégrés communautaires ou la mise en commun de programmes nationaux de recherche seront particulièrement appropriés, en y associant les chercheurs et institutions de recherche des pays tiers.

For the EU Health Award, the second prize of €15,000 was awarded to the Alliance to Save our Antibiotics, Compassion in World Farming and the Soil Association, and the third prize of €10,000 went to the World Alliance Against Antibiotic Resistance for their campaign "Acting to Preserve Antibiotics".

The framework facilitates the opening of ERA to the world by integrating Europe's neighbours into the ERA through association to FP7, by fostering co-operation with key third countries through geographic and thematic targeting, and by improving the framework conditions for international ST co-operation, such as for global research infrastructures, the mobility of researchers, mutual opening up of research programmes and intellectual property rights.

Subject to technical and financial constraints and on the basis of international agreements, the geographical coverage of the services provided by the EGNOS system could be extended to other regions of the world, in particular to the territories of candidate countries, of third countries associated with the Single European Sky and of countries in the European Neighbourhood Policy.

As it is a small country's interests which are at stake here, and since at the same time Mr Verheugen is lobbying on behalf of a large country's interest in the building of the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea, hoping that Finland will agree to attach little importance to the environmental problems associated with the pipeline, would it not be true to say that Germany too is treating Russia like a Third World country in this context, and does not the German Commissioner, as Commissioner for Industry, have any interests to defend other than Germany's?

Welcomes the organisation in Paris (1-3 February 2007) of the third World Congress against the Death Penalty and associates itself with its final declaration; intends to follow up on the Congress, notably by developing the parliamentary dimension of the global campaign against the death penalty and raising the matter through its inter-parliamentary delegations and participations in joint parliamentary assemblies; calls on the Council and the Commission to take every possible opportunity to support the establishment of regional abolitionist coalitions, with a special focus on Arab countries;

Even now, however, we can take practical steps, for example by regularising the situation of illegal immigrants, prohibiting collective deportations on charter flights, insisting that the Council freezes the association agreements with Israel, reorganising the distribution of wealth, in particular by imposing a Tobin tax on movements of capital, or, finally, cancelling third world debt.
