On 12 July 2000 Petition 461/2000 by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, on the protection of threatened species from unlawful hunting and trade, was referred to the Committee on Petitions pursuant to Rule 174(5) of the Rules of Procedure.

In order to assist Member States with the implementation of Council Directive 1999/22/EC of 29 March 1999 relating to the keeping of wild animals in zoos, the Commission organised a seminar in March 2000, in collaboration with the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), with representatives from Member States, Member State zoos and non- governmental organisations (NGOs).
Afin d'aider les États membres à mettre en œuvre la directive 1999/22/CE du Conseil, du 29 mars 1999, relative à la détention d'animaux sauvages dans un environnement zoologique, la Commission a organisé en mars 2000 un séminaire, en collaboration avec la European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA - association européenne des zoos et aquariums publics), auquel ont participé des représentants des États membres, des zoos des États membres et des organisations non gouvernementales (ONG).

Whereas a number of organisations such as the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria have produced guidelines for the care and accomodation of animals in zoos which could, where appropriate, assist in the development and adoption of national standards,
