Welcomes the close cooperation between the US and the EU on the status negotiations in Kosovo and highlights the need to find a balanced and viable outcome on Kosovo's future status; encourages both partners to use the EU-US Summit, to be held on 30 April 2007 in Washington, to endorse their consensus on the Ahtisaari Plan and to continue their dialogue with all parties concerned; recommends, to this end, a closer security relationship between NATO and the EU, in particular in view of the situation in Kosovo, where the EU will take over from United Nations Mission in Kosovo while some 16 000 NATO troops will remain; believes that a stronger EU-US partnership will complement rather than undermine that relationship;
16. se félicite de la coopération étroite entre les États-Unis et l'UE sur les négociations relatives au statut du Kosovo et souligne la nécessité de parvenir à une solution équilibrée et viable sur son statut futur; incite les deux partenaires à saisir l'occasion du sommet UE/États-Unis qui se tiendra le 30 avril 2007 à Washington pour entériner leur accord sur le plan Ahtisaari et pour poursuivre leur dialogue avec toutes les parties concernées; recommande, à cet effet, l'instauration d'une relation étroite entre l'OTAN et l'UE, notamment en ce qui concerne la situation au Kosovo où l'UE va prendre le relais de la mission des Nations unies au Kosovo alors que quelque 16 000 soldats de l'OTAN sont encore sur le terrain; estime qu'un partenariat UE/États-Unis plus solide conforterait cette relation, au lieu d'y faire obstacle;

On June 15-16, an international forum was held in Montreal, under the auspices of Elections Canada. Participants included representatives of election management bodies from across the Americas, as well as the CEP, and representatives of the Organization of American States and the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.

(Return tabled) Question No. 135 Ms. Alexa McDonough: With regard to the death of Canadian citizen Zahra Kazemi in Iran: (a) what specific actions, if any, have the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the Department of Citizenship and Immigration, the Department of Justice and the Prime Minister’s Office undertaken in Iran, at the United Nations and within other multilateral forums since the government was first notified of Ms. Kazemi’s arrest in Iran; and (b) what specific recommendations, if any, have the Prime Minister and Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Citizenship and Immigration, and Justice received from departmental experts, with regard to proposed actions the government may take in Iran, at the United Nations, and within other multilateral forums to ensure (i) that a full and accountable investigation into Ms. Kazemi’s death took place, (ii) that the perpetrators were tried in a fair and transparent trial, and (iii) that her remains were returned to her family in Canada for a full forensic examination and burial?

– (ES) Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, last Saturday, in Madrid, I participated in one of the many round tables organised within the NGO forum that accompanied the Second United Nations World Assembly on Ageing.
