To honour the legacy of Dr. Helmut Kohl, Honorary Citizen of Europe, the three European institutions are co-organising a European Ceremony of Honour on 1 July in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Jean Monnet, the first Honorary Citizen of Europe, once said that nothing is possible without people, and that nothing lasts without institutions, and what he said is true to this day.

Yesterday, in the presence of the President of the Italian Parliament, Ferdinando Casini, of Helmut Kohl, Honorary Citizen of Europe, of the French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, and of many others, we celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of our group, and it was made clear once again that we, in the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats, stand for a Community of Europe, because we know that a return to mere cooperation between governments would be a step backwards.
Nous avons célébré hier, en présence du président du parlement italien, Ferdinando Casini, du citoyen d’honneur de l’Europe, Helmut Kohl, du Premier ministre français, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, et de beaucoup d’autres encore, le cinquantième anniversaire de notre groupe et réaffirmé que le groupe du parti populaire européen (démocrates-chrétiens) et des démocrates européens était favorable à une Europe communautaire, certain qu’il est qu’une simple coopération intergouvernementale constituerait une régression.

Let us, in this hour of joy over the euro, which the President of the Commission has described as a gigantic project, let us remember – for the euro has many parents, indeed only too many fathers – that it was people such as Helmut Kohl, the Honorary Citizen of Europe, François Mitterrand and Jacques Delors, who, with the support of others, advanced this great project in those days.
En ce moment de joie autour de l'euro - que le président de la Commission a défini comme un projet gigantesque ; en effet, l'euro a beaucoup de pères et de mères, ou alors il a seulement, hélas, beaucoup de pères -, permettez-nous de rappeler que ce sont des personnalités comme Helmut Kohl, citoyen d'honneur de l'Europe, comme François Mitterrand et Jacques Delors qui ont lancé à l'époque ce grand projet, avec le soutien d'autres personnes encore.
