The work of the Committee makes an effective contribution to improving the working environment to protect workers’ health and safety by providing the Commission with scientific evidence on the health effects of chemical agents on workers at work which is indispensable in order that the Commission is able to attain the relevant Union social policy objectives.

In order to improve the working environment, as regards the protection of the safety and health of workers as provided for in the Treaty and successive Community strategies and action programmes concerning health and safety at the workplace, the aim of the Agency shall be to provide the Community bodies, the Member States, the social partners and those involved in the field with the technical, scientific and economic information and evaluations of use in the field of safety and health at work.
En vue d'améliorer l'environnement de travail, concernant la sécurité et la protection de la santé des travailleurs, conformément au traité et aux stratégies et programmes d'action communautaires successifs relatifs à la sécurité et à la santé sur le lieu de travail, l'Agence a pour objectif de fournir aux instances communautaires, aux États membres, aux partenaires sociaux et aux milieux intéressés les informations et évaluations techniques, scientifiques et économiques utiles dans le domaine de la sécurité et de la santé au travail".

The proposal for a directive falls under the heading of measures to improve the working environment because, according to Article 31 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights under the heading ‘Fair and just working conditions’, every worker has the right to working conditions which respect his or her health, safety and dignity.
La proposition de directive s’inscrit dans le cadre des actions relatives à la promotion de l’amélioration du milieu de travail, car, conformément à l’article 31 de la Charte des droits fondamentaux intitulé "Conditions de travail justes et équitables", tout travailleur a droit à des conditions de travail qui respectent sa santé, sa sécurité et sa dignité.

The priorities in the work programme are employment, mobility and enlargement and the specific measures planned are aimed to facilitate the transformation of the economy, by striving for increased competitiveness, improving the working environment, promoting equal access to the labour market and strengthening equal treatment at work (gender, age, disability, anti-racism etc).
