For bringing the Gully to the attention of parliament and all Canadians, I wish to extend my thanks to Sarah Dover of the World Wildlife Fund, Dr. Rick Smith of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Elisabeth May of the Sierra Club, Derek Jones of Newellton, Nova Scotia and Mark Butler of the Ecology Action Centre of Nova Scotia.

The research will be being conducted by ICIPE (the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology), in collaboration with a number of laboratories, universities and research institutes in developing and developed countries.

But last year, the Ecology Action Centre held the first international symposium on this group of animals.

At the current stage of planning, the project will consist of the following main elements: - the creation of adequate infrastructure facilities for securing livelihoods and for tourism/leisure, - the conversion of agriculture to create a recreational, experience and demonstration countryside with forms of land use in line with local natural conditions, and the development of additional sources of income from recreation and nature tourism, - provision of educational institutions for various target groups to improve their understanding of ecological issues, - possible future-orientated and environment-friendly transport development, - creation of establishments for improving the dissemination of know-how and information, - possible establishment of an international research centre in relation to forest, soil, water and air.
Dans sa phase actuelle, le projet comporte les principaux éléments suivants : - création d'infrastructures suffisantes d'intérêt général et de tourisme et loisirs, - réorganisation de l'agriculture en vue de constituer un paysage réservé à la détente, la découverte et la démonstration, proposant des formes de mise en valeur des terres adaptées aux conditions naturelles des sites, et de créer des nouvelles sources de revenus dans le domaine de la détente et du tourisme de la nature, - mise en place d'organismes de formation destinés à différents groupes cibles afin d'améliorer la compréhension des questions écologiques, - prévision éventuelle de transports de l'avenir et respectueux de l'environnement, - création d'organismes destinés à favoriser la transmission du savoir et de l'information, - création éventuelle d'un centre international de recherches sur la forêt, les sols, l'eau et l'air.
