The new project “Minimising the Illegal Killing of Elephants and other Endangered Species (MIKES)” builds on an existing similar project which has existed since 2001: It has successfully documented alarming increases of elephant poaching and highlighted the need to act against escalating international illegal trade in elephant ivory.

To summarise, the Community is not prepared to give its consent to a resumption of commercial trading in ivory until such time as appropriate mechanisms are in place to prevent the more widespread illegal killing of elephants, and it thus calls on all range states of elephants to engage in constructive dialogue and to cooperate in maintaining stocks of elephants and in their sustainable management.
Pour récapituler, la Communauté n’est pas disposée à donner son accord à une reprise du commerce de l’ivoire, tant que les mécanismes appropriés ne seront pas en place pour empêcher l’extension du massacre illégal des éléphants. Aussi lance-t-elle un appel à tous les États abritant des éléphants pour qu’ils engagent un dialogue constructif et coopèrent pour préserver les populations d’éléphants et gérer celles-ci de manière durable.
