The European Union in its Declaration No 11 on the status of churches and non-confessional organisations, annexed to the Final Act of the Amsterdam Treaty, has explicitly recognised that it respects and does not prejudice the status under national law of churches and religious associations or communities in the Member States and that it equally respects the status of philosophical and non-confessional organisations.

Ada) and the recognition of its property rights to its rightful owner, the Greek Orthodox community; reiterates its request for the reopening of the Greek Orthodox Halki seminary; regrets the fact that in the area of religious freedom there has so far been little improvement; calls upon Turkey to address all these difficulties drawing from the relevant case law of the European Court of Human rights (see a.o. case Kokkinakis, Manoussakis, Metropolitan Church of Bessarabia, Serif, Canea Catholic Church, Hasan and Chaush);

It is unacceptable for the Union to be quite prepared to make concessions to the church in Poland. Not only has the Union agreed to the ban on abortion, so restricting the rights of women, but it has also imposed a pre-emptive ban on any Community legislation to amend Polish legislation on the matter. Consequently, the European Union has left the women of Poland in the grip of a particularly reactionary church!
Non seulement l'Union européenne accepte l'interdiction de l'interruption volontaire de grossesse, restreignant la liberté des femmes, mais elle interdit par avance à la législation communautaire d'amender la législation polonaise en la matière, abandonnant les femmes polonaises sous la coupe d'une Église particulièrement réactionnaire !
