Takes the view that the proposed exercise should focus first and foremost on the very aims of the multilateral trade system, to ensure that they are mutually supportive and consistent with the action being taken by other international organisations; considers in particular that the coordination of WTO activities with those of the International Labour Organization ( ILO), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Kyoto programme on renewable energy, should be strengthened, in order to ensure greater consistency in the decision-making processes of those organisations; in this connection, believes that the ILO should be granted observer status before the WTO and that a committee on trade and decent employment should be set up modelled on the Committee on Trade and Environment;

With a view to facilitating worldwide trade while protecting human health and the environment, harmonised criteria for classification and labelling and rules for safety data sheets have been carefully developed over a period of more than 10 years within the United Nations (UN) structure, resulting in the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (hereinafter referred to as the GHS).
En vue de faciliter les échanges au niveau mondial, tout en protégeant la santé humaine et l’environnement, des critères harmonisés de classification et d’étiquetage et des règles relatives aux fiches de données de sécurité ont été élaborées avec soin sur une période de plus de dix ans au sein de la structure des Nations unies, ce qui a donné naissance au système général harmonisé de classification et d’étiquetage des produits chimiques (ci-après dénommé «le SGH»).

What I would like to say, however, and we have attempted to make the document reflect this deeply-considered idea, is that in order to ensure an effective multilateral system and more specifically the credibility of the United Nations system, we must in theory be prepared to ensure that all the principles on which the United Nations is founded are observed and that this organisation has the credibility that it deserves.
