There is no commonly accepted definition of the concept of civil society.

Organised civil society: Although there is no legal definition of this concept, the term may be used to designate all organisations associating parties from the labour market, organisations representing various socio-economic groups, non-government organisations, community-based and denominational organisations.
Société civile organisée : il n'existe pas de définition juridique de cette notion. Néanmoins ce terme peut servir à désigner l'ensemble des organisations regroupant divers acteurs du marché du travail, des organisations représentatives des milieux socio-économiques, des organisations non gouvernementales, des organisations de base communautaire et les organisations religieuses.

Given the recent nature of the concept of a "knowledge-based economy and society" and its key importance for the European strategy of relaunching and modernising, it is necessary to promote research and analysis in this field to support national and Community policies.
Etant donné le caractère récent de la notion « d'économie et société fondées sur la connaissance » et son importance centrale dans la stratégie européenne de relance et de modernisation, il est nécessaire de promouvoir en appui aux politiques publiques nationales et européennes des travaux de recherche et d'analyse dans ce domaine.

Three of those were tabled by us, and we feel they are particularly important because they uphold three concepts: firstly, recognition of the importance of the role played by the family at all stages in the lives of people with disabilities; secondly, promotion of a culture of solidarity within society, meaning an understanding that a person’s value is not expressed solely in terms of what he does or is able to do, but primarily in what he represents, namely a human being in all respects; thirdly and lastly, reflection on the concept of the quality of life of a person with disabilities, understood not just to be access to employment or training but also all the other aspects of daily life, in the family and in and as part of society, a quality of life which is genuinely high and equal for people with disabilities too.
Parmi ceux-ci nous en avons présenté trois, auxquels nous tenions spécialement parce que trois concepts y sont énoncés : premièrement, la reconnaissance du rôle assumé par la famille dans la vie de la personne handicapée ; deuxièmement, la promotion d'une société intégrant une culture du "social" et de la solidarité, c'est-à-dire intégrant la compréhension que la valeur de la personne handicapée ne s'exprime pas seulement à travers ce qu'elle fait ou ce qu'elle peut faire, mais essentiellement à travers ce qu'elle représente en tant que personne humaine, avec tout ce que cela implique ; enfin, troisièmement, l'approfondissement du concept de qualité de vie d'une personne handicapée, comprise non seulement comme l'exercice d'un emploi ou le fait de suivre une formation mais aussi comme l'activité quotidienne dans toutes ses autres expressions, avec la famille, au sein de la société ; mais il faut que cette qualité de vie soit vraiment élevée, et égale pour ces personnes aussi.
