In fact, the 30 priority projects involving the trans-European transport network largely favour methods of transport which are more fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly, such as rail or water.

The delay in compliance with the commitments made in 1996 by means of codecision between Parliament and the Council, with regard to the funding of the trans-European transport networks, is a fact. It is not merely an opinion.
Les retards dans le respect des engagements pris en 1996 par le biais de la codécision entre le Parlement et le Conseil en matière de financement des réseaux transeuropéens de transport est un fait et non une simple opinion.

We agree, in fact, with his analysis of the importance of the trans-European networks, which is evident in many respects: these trans-European networks are first and foremost part of a growth initiative that has been relaunched by the European Council; they contribute, or must also contribute, to the objective of competitiveness as defined at the March European Council; they represent, moreover, an essential element of the smooth functioning of the internal market; and, above all, they are indispensable for guaranteeing the territorial cohesion of the European Union.
Nous partageons en effet son analyse sur l’importance des réseaux transeuropéens, qui se manifeste à plusieurs égards: ces réseaux transeuropéens s’inscrivent d’abord dans une initiative de croissance qui a été relancée par le Conseil européen; ils contribuent ou doivent contribuer également à l’objectif de compétitivité tel qu’il a été défini lors du Conseil européen de mars; ils constituent en outre un élément essentiel du bon fonctionnement du marché intérieur et, surtout, ils sont indispensables pour garantir la cohésion territoriale de l’Union européenne.

Notwithstanding this fact, the adoption of a too-fragmented deployment throughout the European rail network, mainly along the trans-European rail corridors, would give rise to major cost and operational overheads resulting from the needs to ensure backward compatibility and interconnection with a diversity of legacy facilities.
Malgré ce fait, l'adoption d'un déploiement trop fragmenté dans le réseau européen, principalement le long des corridors européens, provoquerait un accroissement des coûts et des frais généraux opérationnels résultant des besoins d'assurer la compatibilité et l'interconnexion avec une diversité d'équipements existants.

The fact that in Madeira Porto Santo or Porto Funchal can be included, in the Azores Punta Delgada, in the Canaries Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Cristianos, Santa Cruz de la Palma, San Sebastián de la Gomera, Las Palmas or Arrecife, in Réunion Pointe des Galets, in Guadeloupe Pointe-à-Pitre, or in Martinique Fort de France and Basse-Terre, clearly shows how important it is for these archipelagos that their ports can be incorporated once and for all as essential elements within the trans-European networks, bringing these outermost regions closer to the rest of the European Union.
L'inclusion de Porto Santo ou Porto Funchal à Madère, de Punta Delgada aux Açores, de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Cristianos, Santa Cruz de la Palma, San Sebastián de la Gomera, Las Palmas ou Arrecife dans l'archipel des Canaries, de Pointe des Galets à la Réunion, de Pointe-à-Pitre en Guadeloupe ou de Fort-de-France et Basse-Terre en Martinique, montre clairement l'importance que revêt pour ces archipels l'inclusion définitive de leurs ports comme éléments essentiels au sein des réseaux transeuropéens, une mesure qui permet de rapprocher ces zones ultrapériphériques du reste de l'Union européenne.

As part of the Trans-European Transport Network project, (railways section), the link is, in principle, eligible for receipt of Community subsidies. However, the Community would again like to point to the fact that no request for funding has been received from the Spanish authorities for the Madrid-Valencia high speed rail link.
Toutefois, la Commission rappelle encore le fait qu’aucune demande de financement n’a été reçue des autorités espagnoles pour la ligne de grande vitesse entre Madrid et Valence.
