TRADUCTIONS EN CONTEXTE

I am pleased to have an opportunity to rise today to share my thoughts on an important issue that goes to the heart of the legitimacy of this House, democracy.
Je suis heureuse d'avoir l'opportunité de me lever aujourd'hui pour partager ma réflexion face à une question importante qui est au coeur de la légitimité de cette Chambre, soit la démocratie.

It is outrageous for democracy to be seen to be brushed aside in this House, the same House in which we are so fond of waving our fingers in the air whilst moralising about countries without democracy and in which we honour those who champion democracy with what we dare to call the Sakharov Prize.
Il est scandaleux de voir cette Assemblée bafouer ainsi la démocratie, cette même Assemblée qui est tellement encline à menacer d’un doigt moralisateur les pays non démocratiques et qui honore les défenseurs de la démocratie avec ce que nous avons l’audace d’appeler le «Prix Sakharov».

Hopes that those responsible for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto are identified and held responsible as soon as possible; notes the worsening human rights situation in Pakistan throughout 2007, including in particular the threats to the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of the media; with that in mind, condemns the defamation campaign against Iftikhar Mohammad Choudhry, former Chief Justice of Pakistan, as well as the fact that he has been removed from office and placed under house arrest; calls on the Council and the Commission to support the movement for democracy started by the judiciary and the bar, particularly by extending invitations to some of their representatives, including Mr Choudhry; calls for the reinstitution of all deposed judges; notes the adoption of a new Country Strategy Paper for Pakistan and welcomes the mainstreaming of conflict prevention and human rights throughout that document; notes that the first meeting of the European Community-Pakistan Joint Commission was held in Islamabad on 24 May 2007 and stresses the need for human rights to be at the forefront of the agenda for all subsequent meetings;

As a former prime minister today cautioned the House, democracy loses its strength gradually by increments and it takes vigilance and a concerted political will to stem the erosion of democracy by those who would seek to concentrate power in the hands of a few.
Pour reprendre la mise en garde faite à la Chambre aujourd'hui par un ancien premier ministre, la démocratie s'effrite graduellement et il faudra faire preuve de vigilance et d'une grande volonté politique pour enrayer l'érosion de notre démocratie par des éléments qui cherchent à concentrer le pouvoir entre les mains de quelques personnes.

As I already mentioned in the House, democracy is a blessing that must never be taken for granted and that must always be cherished.
Or, comme je l'ai déjà déclaré à la Chambre, la démocratie est une richesse qu'il ne nous faut jamais prendre définitivement pour acquise et qu'il nous faut chérir soigneusement.

Maybe you will understand if I say that I was reminded at that moment of a forceful slogan shouted out a few years ago by a group chairman in this House – 'CRS equals SS!' I have to say that I found this action by the CRS, the French riot squad, unfitting in a democracy and I believe that it was detrimental to this House. I therefore ask you to take appropriate follow-up action.
Peut-être pourrez-vous comprendre que je me sois rappelé à cet instant un slogan qu’un président de groupe de cette Assemblée proclamait haut et fort il y a quelques années : "CRS, SS". J’ai eu le sentiment, quoi qu’il en soit, que cette attitude des CRS n’était pas digne d’une démocratie et était également préjudiciable pour notre Assemblée.

– (ES) Madam President, our colleague and friend Laura González began her speech with a quotation from the Argentinean writer, Julio Cortázar, about the prostitution of the words democracy and sustainability, but this House has not forgotten where Chernobyl is and is aware that Mr Castro’s Cuba is full of democrats, as we all know.
- (ES) Madame la Présidente, notre collègue et amie, Laura González, a commencé son intervention en citant l'écrivain argentin Julio Cortázar au sujet de la prostitution des mots démocratie et durabilité mais cette Assemblée n'a pas oublié où se trouvait Tchernobyl et n'ignore pas non plus que la Cuba de M. Castro foisonne de démocrates, comme nous le savons tous.

Agency-managed programmes have three main objectives. These are: (i) to carry out immediate physical and economic reconstruction (rehabilitation and repair of key infrastructure and public utilities, such as energy, housing, water, transport); (ii) to lay the foundation for the development of a market-oriented economy and to foster private enterprise (support to enterprise development, agriculture, health); and (iii) to support the establishment of democracy, human rights and the rule of law (strengthening of local administration, NGOs, the media and the judiciary).
Les programmes gérés par l'Agence poursuivent les trois objectifs principaux suivants : (i) exécuter la reconstruction matérielle et économique immédiate (réhabilitation et réparation des infrastructures essentielles et des réseaux publics tels que l'énergie, le logement, l'eau et les transports); (ii) mettre en place les bases du développement d'une économie de marché et favoriser l'entreprise privée (soutien au développement des entreprises, à l'agriculture et à la santé); et (iii) soutenir l'établissement de la démocratie, des droits de l'homme et de l'État de droit (en renforçant l'administration locale, les ONG, les médias et le pouvoir judiciaire).

If we ever find that the government of day can assume the outcome of a vote in the House, democracy in this country is in extreme peril.
Le jour où le gouvernement en place tiendra pour acquis le résultat d'un vote qui se tient à la Chambre, une lourde menace pèsera sur la démocratie dans notre pays.

In the House democracy works for the government and for the opposition.
À la Chambre des communes, la démocratie passe par le gouvernement et par l'opposition.
