The use of the word "Sherry" in these composite terms was the sole exception - for a transitional period and territorially limited - granted in the Community to the general principle established in Regulation No 823/87 according to which the name of a specified region (in this case Jerez de la Frontera in Spain) can be given to beverages only if it gives rise to no confusion with the quality wine produced in that region.
