– Mr President, as a supplementary, is the presidency concerned about the fact that there are so many power stations, particularly around the North Sea and in the north of Europe, where, when water is sucked in to cool the power station, vast numbers, literally billions, of tiny floating creatures that would turn into fish are destroyed. Would the President-in-Office undertake to investigate this and try to conserve the stocks of fish, many of which are destroyed in their infancy?

La présidente en exercice du Conseil accepterait-elle de mener une enquête à ce sujet et de veiller à la conservation du stock de poisson, dont une grande partie est détruite au stade juvénile ?

So I should now like to appeal to the House and the Commission: somebody has to put the case for this European project. The case for the European project is that it is not the sum of national interests but a joint project, as President Romano Prodi has said, and the institutions must now look to the future and join hands so that enlargement can take place, so that the citizens can look on Europe as we would like them to and so that politics can go back to building the European project rather than just upholding power, particularly the power of the larger countries.
D'où l'appel que je souhaiterais lancer à cette Assemblée et à la Commission : il faut que quelqu'un fasse œuvre de pédagogie européenne pour dire que le projet européen n'est pas la somme des intérêts nationaux, que c'est un projet solidaire, comme le président Prodi a eu l'occasion de le dire. C'est en regardant vers l'avenir que les institutions doivent se donner la main, aujourd'hui, pour que l'élargissement soit une réalité, pour que les citoyens voient l'Europe comme nous voulons qu'ils la voient et pour que la politique revienne à la construction du projet européen et pas seulement à la défense du pouvoir et, surtout, du pouvoir des grands pays.
