As well as leading delegations, Speaker Milliken himself represented the House of Commons at three notable conferences over the past year. These were the G8 Speakers' Conference in Italy in September 2009; the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth in India in January 2010; and the Canadian Presiding Officers Conference in Yukon in January 2010.

On 23 February 2018 an international high-level conference on the Sahel was held in Brussels under the aegis of Mahamadou Issoufou, President of the Republic of Niger and President-in-office of the G5 Sahel, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, at the end of which the following conclusions were drawn:

Enrique Barón Crespo, European Parliament representative at the Intergovernmental Conference – (ES) President-in-Office of the Council, President of the Commission, ladies and gentlemen, I can testify as someone who was present at the end of the Intergovernmental Conference – I think that it is the first time that the President and the three representatives have been admitted to the Conference – and I can say that the Portuguese Presidency has listened to the European Parliament: firstly by restoring citizenship, something that appeared to be impossible until mid-September, and secondly, by giving proper treatment to the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which also seemed impossible, and also by recognising the substantial extension of majority voting.

In addition to the functions and powers conferred on the President of the Office by Article 119 of the Regulation on the Community trade mark, the President may place before the Commission any proposal to amend this Regulation, the implementing regulation, the fees regulation and any other rule to the extent that they apply to registered Community designs, after consulting the Administrative Board and, in the case of the fees regulation, the Budget Committee.
