By providing finance and advice to those undertakings, venture capital funds stimulate economic growth, contribute to the creation of jobs and capital mobilisation, foster the establishment and expansion of innovative undertakings, increase their investment in research and development and foster entrepreneurship, innovation and competitiveness in line with the objectives of the Europe 2020 Strategy set out in the Commission Communication of 3 March 2010 entitled ‘Europe 2020: A strategy for delivering smart, sustainable and inclusive growth’ (Europe 2020) and in the context of the long-term challenges of the Member States, such as those identified in the report of the European Strategy and Policy Analysis System of March 2012 entitled ‘Global Trends 2030 — citizens in an interconnected and polycentric world’.

Regrets the low number of Union citizens resident in Member States other than their own who take advantage of the right to vote or stand in either European or local elections in their place of residence; notes the practical obstacles that too often confront potential voters in the exercise of their rights; urges the Commission, Member States and local authorities, in view of the imminent 2009 European elections, to launch pan-European, effective information campaigns about the electoral rights of Union citizens and give practical advice on how to exercise them at local level;

– (IT) Mr President, for more than a year, a majority in this Parliament – although the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats are of the opposite opinion – has claimed that it is a serious violation of the fundamental right of European citizens to data protection to demand that all European airlines are obliged to process European citizens’ data contained in their computerised reservation systems as requested by the United States Department of Homeland Security, Bureau of Customs and Border Protection and in line with US legislation.
– (IT) Mijnheer de Voorzitter, al sinds meer dan een jaar luidt het meerderheidsstandpunt van het Parlement – niet gedeeld door de EVP – dat de eis – en nu citeer ik de desbetreffende formule – “de in Europa opererende luchtvaartmaatschappijen te verplichten de gegevens van de Europese burgers in hun reserveringssystemen te behandelen zoals het Amerikaanse Bureau Douane en Grensbescherming dat verlangt op grond van de Amerikaanse wetgeving” een ernstige schending betekent van het grondrecht de gegevens van de Europese burgers te beschermen. In de VS bestaat er trouwens niet eens een wet voor de bescherming van persoonsgegevens.

4. The Commission will establish a top class information portal bringing together existing initiatives, including the Dialogue with Citizens and Business [88], the Citizens Signpost Service [89], SOLVIT [90], European Consumer Centres [91], Fin-net [92] and EEJ-Net [93], and giving citizens and business access to a wide range of practical information and advice on Internal Market rights and opportunities [94].
4. De Commissie zal een hoogwaardig informatieportaal tot stand brengen dat bestaande initiatieven, zoals de Dialoog met burgers en bedrijfsleven [88], de Wegwijzerdienst voor burgers [89], SOLVIT [90], de Europese Bureaus voor consumentenvoorlichting [91], FIN-net [92] en het EB-net [93], op één plaats samenbrengt en dat burgers en bedrijven toegang geeft tot een keur van praktische informatie en adviezen over rechten en kansen op de interne markt [94].

It will also be important to give preventive advice on the risks involved by providing appropriate and common advice to citizens via the competent authorities, and in accordance with the advice given by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
