The Body of European Regulators in Telecom, BERT, will be a specialised and independent expert advisory body in order to assist in the implementation of the EU regulatory framework for electronic communications, and would remain independent from the European Commission, the governments, the individual NRA's and the sector.
BERT, het Europees orgaan van regelgevende instanties voor telecommunicatie, zal een gespecialiseerd en onafhankelijk adviesorgaan zijn ter ondersteuning van de uitvoering van het communautaire regelgevingskader voor elektronische telecommunicatie, en zal onafhankelijk van de Europese Commissie, de regeringen, de afzonderlijke nationale regelgevende instanties en de sector opereren.

The new body will be designated Group of European Regulators in Telecoms (GERT).
Deze nieuwe instantie zal voortaan "Europese groep van reguleringsinstanties voor telecommunicatie" ("GERT", Group of European Regulators in Telecoms) worden genoemd.

I therefore support the creation of BERT, or the Body of European Regulators in Telecom, which is an updated and reinforced version of the European Regulators Group for electronic communications networks and services (ERG). It will be responsible for the more coherent application of regulations and will be able to rely on the participation of the NRAs which have precious experience of the day-to-day situation on the ground.
Daarom steun ik de oprichting van het ETO, het Europees Telecomregelgeversorgaan. Deze moderne en versterkte versie van de Europese groep van regelgevende instanties voor elektronische-communicatienetwerken en –diensten (ERG) moet zorgen voor een meer coherente toepassing van de regelgeving en kan daarbij rekenen op de actieve medewerking van de NRI’s, die op dit vlak waardevolle praktijkervaring bezitten.

Although it is of benefit to all to strengthen the internal market in the telecoms sector, I am delighted that the Commission has not succeeded in imposing its authority on us but that Parliament has proposed the Body of European Regulators in Telecom, a credible alternative that enhances cooperation among national regulators and avoids the additional bureaucracy the European Electronic Communications Market Authority would have meant.

Taking into account the recent position adopted by the European Regulators Group (ERG) , independent national regulators will form the heart of the new office, which will be called "Body of the European Telecoms Regulators", to underline this change of approach.

The European Telecom Market Authority will more effectively combine the functions of the current European Regulators Group (ERG) and of the current European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).
