TRADUCTIONS EN CONTEXTE

On 1 July 2013, the Republic of Croatia acceded to the EU and became its 28th Member State. The proposed Council decision aims to approve the Additional Protocol to the EU-South Africa TDCA taking account of Croatia's accession to the EU, on behalf of the Union and its Member States (On 24 September 2012, the Council authorised the Commission to open negotiations with South Africa in order to conclude the Additional Protocol. Those negotiations were successfully completed on 19 May 2014).
Op 1 juli 2013 trad de Republiek Kroatië als 28e lidstaat toe tot de EU. Het voorstel voor een besluit van de Raad beoogt het aanvullende protocol bij de Overeenkomst inzake handel, ontwikkeling en samenwerking tussen de EU en Zuid-Afrika namens de Unie en de lidstaten goed te keuren, rekening houdend met de toetreding van Kroatië tot de EU. On 24 September 2012, the Council authorised the Commission to open negotiations with the Republic of South Africa, on behalf of the Union, its Member States and the Republic of Croatia, to conclude an Additional Protocol to the Agreement on Trade, Development and Cooperation between the European Community and its Member States, of the one part, and the Republic of South Africa, of the other part (1), to take account of the accession of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union (‘the Protocol’).

The Agreement between the European Community and its Member States, of the one part, and the Republic of South Africa, of the other part, amending the Agreement on Trade, Development and Cooperation was finally signed in Kleinmond (South Africa) on 11 September 2009 (following on from the Council decision of 7 April 2008 on the signing of the revised agreement).

The purpose of this Communication on a Strategic Partnership with South Africa is therefore to propose a comprehensive, coherent and coordinated long-term framework for political cooperation with the Republic of South Africa, one which is mindful of South Africa’s traumatic past, of its role as an anchor country in the region and of its unique position on the continent and on the global scene.

The European Union made a significant contribution to the consolidation of democracy in South Africa in particular through the European Programme for Reconstruction and Development, the agreement on the partial access of South Africa to the Lomé Agreement and now the Cotonou partnership agreement and the Trade, Development and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of South Africa (TDCA).

1. The provisions of the TDCA shall be applied to goods exported from either the Republic of South Africa to the Republic of Croatia or from the Republic of Croatia to the Republic of South Africa, which comply with the provisions of Protocol 1 to the TDCA and which on 1 July 2013 were either en route or in temporary storage, in a customs warehouse or in a free zone in South Africa or in Croatia.
