To take account of new scientific data on electromagnetic fields , the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks[33] (SCENIHR) was asked to undertake a comprehensive review of the opinion of the Scientific Committee on Toxicity, Eco-toxicity and the Environment (SCTEE) of October 2001 on the possible health effects of electromagnetic fields, radio frequency fields and microwave radiation.
In verband met nieuwe wetenschappelijke gegevens over elektromagnetische velden is het WCNG[33] verzocht het advies van het Wetenschappelijk comité voor toxiciteit, ecotoxiciteit en milieu (SCTEE) uit oktober 2001 over de mogelijke gezondheidseffecten van elektromagnetische velden, radiofrequentievelden en microgolfstraling volledig te herzien.

Following the publication of a scientific study in 2001, entitled ‘Use of permanent hair dyes and bladder cancer risk’, the Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products and Non-Food Products intended for Consumers, subsequently replaced by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (‘SCCP’), pursuant to Commission Decision 2004/210/EC of 3 March 2004 setting up Scientific Committees in the field of consumer safety, public health and the environment , concluded that the potential risks of the use of hair dyes were of concern.

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (‘SCCP’), subsequently replaced by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (‘SCCS’) pursuant to Commission Decision 2008/721/EC of 5 September 2008 setting up an advisory structure of Scientific Committees and experts in the field of consumer safety, public health and the environment and repealing Decision 2004/210/EC , concluded in its opinion of 2 October 2007 that the data included in the dossier demonstrate that polidocanol is of low toxicity and does not pose a risk to the health of the consumer when used up to 3 % in leave-on and up to 4 % in rinse-off cosmetic products.

The scientific committee shall be made up of members particularly qualified in the field of the environment, designated by the Management Board for a term of four years renewable once, taking into account, inter alia, the scientific areas which need to be represented in the committee in order to assist the Agency in its areas of activity.

This is also consistent with Parliament’s recent resolution which considers that, without prejudice to existing Community legislation and following the opinion of the Scientific Committee on Health and Environment Risks, urgent consideration is to be given to restricting the marketing and/or the use on the European market of dangerous substances, to which new-born babies, children, pregnant women, elderly persons, workers and other high-risk sections of the population are heavily exposed, as safer alternatives become available, including six products from the phthalate family (DEHP, DINP, DBP, DIDP, DNOP, BBP) in domestic products for indoor use and medical devices, except where such a restriction would have a negative impact on medical treatment.

6. Considers that, without prejudice to existing legislation and following the opinion of the Scientific Committee on Health and Environment Risks, urgent consideration needs to be given to restricting the marketing and/or the use on the European market of the following dangerous substances, to which new-born babies, children, pregnant women, elderly persons, workers and other high-risk sections of the population are heavily exposed, as safer alternatives become available:
