The Security Council stressed the responsibility borne by all parties to the conflict for the suffering of the people of South Sudan.

Strongly condemns the deliberate attack on the UN Mission to Sudan (UNMIS) on 10 May 2011 in the Abyei area and denounces the militarisation of that area by both North and South Sudan; urges both parties to the CPA to continue to ensure the safety and security of all peoples in Sudan, in particular in the state of Abyei, without altering the demographic composition of the region; calls for both Sudanese and South Sudanese armed forces to withdraw from Abyei and for both sides to show restraint by engaging in an immediate constructive dialogue for a peaceful solution on the status of Abyei within the framework of the CPA;

– (HU) Mr President, this debate again demonstrates that we newcomer nations should follow the example of the old Member States of the European Union in terms of how German and French people achieved reconciliation, how the Italians and Austrians achieved agreement on South Tyrol, how Dutch and Germans, Germans and Danes, Germans and Belgians resolved centuries-old conflicts.

The European Union encourages the National Congress Party and the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement to work together to achieve the objectives of the CPA keeping in mind that the achievement of a peaceful, democratic, prosperous and united Sudan - in which all people can live together in freedom, without discrimination and with full respect for their rights - goes beyond the relations between the North and the South of Sudan.
