This Directive forms part of a "package" of four directives on the exposure of workers to the risks arising from physical agents: noise, vibration, electromagnetic fields and optical radiation. It provides for measures to protect workers from the risks related to electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields. However, it does not address the long-term effects, including the carcinogenic effects, that could result from exposure to electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields, for which there is no conclusive scientific data establishing a causal link.

ECON also believes that funding measures in the field of taxation should be an absolute priority as it is still an area which displays some irregularities in the internal market, and as a consequence, budget line B5-3001 for the completion and development of the internal market should be kept at the level proposed by the Commission in its draft budget.

Whereas basic standards for the protection of the health of workers and the general public against the dangers arising from ionising radiations must, as specified in the Treaty, be laid down in order to enable each Member State, in accordance with Article 33 of the Treaty, to lay down the appropriate laws, regulations or administrative provisions to ensure compliance, to take the necessary measures with regard to teaching, education and vocational training, and to lay down such provisions in harmony with those applicable in this field in the other Member States;
