Given that the aftermath of the Arab Spring is not being overseen via a structured international institutional framework (such as the Council of Europe or the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) for Central and Eastern Europe) the EU has a bigger responsibility and opportunity to take the lead in facilitating the transition of the region towards democracy and economic integration supported by a fair and free market, even more so because China and the US have a comparatively low economic presence in the region.
