The Canadian Shipowners Association represents the interests of the Canadian flag vessels that trade on the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence waterway, the Arctic and eastern seaboard of Canada and the U.S. Our members are primarily involved in the coasting trade, that is, origin and destination within Canada and with cross-lake trade between Canada and the United States.

Urges the Council, the Commission and the Member States to introduce common controls on arms brokering and trafficking agents: all such agents should be registered in their Member State and should have to apply for a licence for each transaction which they arrange; the EU should also introduce common effective controls and monitoring of the end-use of arms, it should include the accession and associated countries in these efforts and target assistance to work with them to control arms transfers into ACP countries, and it should also increase financial and technical support for programmes to tackle the proliferation and illicit trafficking of small arms within affected regions (such as those under way in ECOWAS, the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region, and SADC);
