In a letter sent to the French President on 5 March, the FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights) and the French Human Rights League denounced the inhuman methods of expulsion used by the French authorities, pointing out that these expulsions were being carried out 'manifestly in violation of international and regional human rights instruments.

To Mrs Boudjenah, on the subject of Tunisia, I should like to say, briefly, that the Council takes the view that it really is a pity that a country which has made such remarkable social and economic progress should be denied the credit that it deserves, simply because those who are in charge are apparently incapable of understanding that, to us and to their own population, elements such as freedom of expression and freedom of the press are essential, and it is precisely this situation which is preventing the European Union from pushing further ahead with the Tunisian model, which would be worth doing if only the situation with regard to human rights and the treatment of the human rights league was considerably better than it is at the moment.

The project leader is the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues (FIDH), based in Paris, which will implement the project with various partners in the region, such as the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, the Palestinian Society for the Protection of Human Rights and Environment, the Jordanian Society for Human Rights, the Lebanese Association for Human Rights, the Foundation for Human and Humanitarian Rights in Lebanon, the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, the Moroccan Organization for Human Rights and the Tunisian League for Human Rights.

Dr. Marzouki, who is a former president of the Tunisian Human Rights League, is well known in Quebec for his many conferences and publications on human rights and democratic development.
