Further implementation of the Shared Environmental Information System principle of ‘produce once, use often’ and the common approaches and standards on acquisition and collation of spatial information under the INSPIRE and Copernicus (previously known as GMES) systems, as well as other environmental information systems for Europe (such as BISE and WISE), will help avoid duplication of effort and eliminate unnecessary administrative burdens on public authorities, as will efforts to streamline reporting obligations under different pieces of legislation.

The Shared Environmental Information System SEIS[16], an approach being encouraged by the European Commission and the European Environment Agency (EEA), aims to modernise and simplify the availability, exchange and use of the data and information required for the design and implementation of environmental policy, according to which the current, mostly centralised systems for reporting are progressively replaced by systems based on access, sharing and interoperability.

3. Organisations which have a certified environmental management system, recognized according to Article 45(4), shall not be obliged to conduct a full initial environmental review, with regard to information provided by the recognised certified environmental management system.
