Last week, at the European Parliament in Brussels, we held a very special commemoration, which we arranged jointly with the European Jewish Congress, in order to remember the 70anniversary of the Night of Broken Glass.

The seriousness of the situation following the recent repeated acts of violence against the Jewish community in France, Belgium and England was discussed during a phone call between the President of the European Commission (EC), Romano Prodi, and the European Jewish Congress (EJC) President, Cobi Benatoff.

More question marks are raised by the fact that Mr Prodi considers himself compelled to cancel plans to hold a seminar on anti-Semitism in Brussels in February following criticism by Mr Benatoff and Mr Bronfman (Presidents of the European Jewish Congress and the World Jewish Congress respectively) of the Commission's efforts to combat anti-Semitism in the Union published in an article in The Financial Times on 5 January 2004.

Prodi se voit contraint d’annuler le séminaire sur l’antisémitisme qui devait se tenir en février à Bruxelles après que MM Benatoff et Bronfman (respectivement président du Congrès juif mondial et du Congrès juif européen) aient critiqué l’action de la Commission contre l’antisémitisme dans l’Union dans un article paru dans le Financial Times le 5 janvier 2004.

In this letter Mr Bronfman expressed his deep appreciation for Mr Prodi personally and in his capacity as President of the European Commission. He also asked for an appointment for himself and for the President of the European Jewish Congress, Mr Cobi Benatoff, so as to solve the controversy that has arisen in the past days.
