IN-CONTEXT TRANSLATIONS

AB. whereas the TTIP, similarly to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, could constrain the ability of the EU and the Member States to protect nutrition policy from the influence of vested interests, reduce the range of interventions available to actively discourage consumption of less healthy food (and to promote healthy food), including via public procurement policies, and limit the EU and the Member States’ capacity to implement these interventions;

B. whereas plastic materials are becoming increasingly diverse and their use is on the rise, leading to larger volumes of waste and increasing combination with other materials and compounds; whereas plastic accumulates in large quantities (a total of 80 MT is estimated to be floating in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans) and persists in the environment for hundreds of years, killing marine life, provoking toxic reactions and releasing endocrine disrupters, substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction , nanoparticles, and persistent organic pollutants into the ecosystems and hence the food chain; whereas in 2010 alone, 95.5 billion plastic bags were placed on the EU market, the majority of which were intended to be used only once, while they are restricted or banned in many countries;

Points out that in the Pacific region, 15 ACP states have special relations with the EU under the Cotonou Agreement, and that, in those countries, the fisheries sector, including inshore and offshore fishing, processing and aquaculture, plays a key role in terms of food security and economic and social development;

B. whereas Malaysia is an active member of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (Unescap), the Colombo Plan promoting economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)), and the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA); whereas Malaysia has also been a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) since its establishment in 1995, and is a member of the Group of 77 (G77) developing countries, the Developing Eight (D-8), the G15 and the UN Human Rights Council (2010-2013), among others;

Together with ODA flows from the EU Member States, such as Portugal’s bilateral aid of more than € 300 M for Timor-Leste, the EU is one of the few major donors to the Pacific ACP countries, and this includes support financed by the EU’s budget, such as the Erasmus Mundus programme, food security and environment.
