To satisfy the growing public interest in the management of forests for their environmental and social benefits requires, in many cases, changes in management practices that may reduce the economic viability of forestry.

This Section concerns aid for afforestation and creation of woodland, the establishment of agro-forestry systems, the prevention and restoration of damage to forests from forest fires, natural disasters, adverse climatic events, catastrophic events, climate change related events, pest and disease outbreaks, investments improving the resilience and environmental value, as well as the mitigation potential of forest ecosystems and investments in forestry technologies and in the processing, in the mobilising and in the marketing of forest products.

It should also cover the restoration of forests damaged by fire or other natural disasters and catastrophic events and relevant prevention measures; investments in forestry technologies and in the processing; the mobilising and marketing of forest products aimed at improving the economic and environmental performance of forest holders; and non- remunerative investments which improve ecosystem and climate resilience and environmental value of forest ecosystems.

Forests provide a broad variety of environmental, economic and social benefits including timber and non-timber forest products and environmental services essential for humankind, such as maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem functions and protecting the climate system.

Assistance also covers support for non-productive investments linked to the achievement of agri or forest-environmental commitments or the achievement of other agri-environmental objectives, as well as measures aimed at improving forestry resources with an environmental objective (support for the first afforestation of agricultural land, establishment of agroforestry systems or restoring forestry potential and preventing natural disasters).
Sont également concernées par l’aide, les mesures de soutien aux investissements non productifs liés à la réalisation des engagements agro ou sylvoenvironnementaux ou à l'atteinte d'autres objectifs agroenvironnementaux ainsi que les mesures visant à améliorer les ressources forestières dans un objectif environnemental (aide au premier boisement des terres, à l'installation de systèmes agroforestiers ou à la reconstitution du potentiel forestier et à la prévention des catastrophes naturelles).
