It is a follow-up to the Commission staff working paper "Science, society and the citizen in Europe" [2], which in November 2000 set the basis for the debate on the relationship of science and technology with society and Europe's citizens [3].
Il constitue la suite logique du document des services de la Commission « Science, société et citoyens en Europe » [2] qui a posé, en novembre 2000, les bases du débat sur les relations qu'entretiennent la science et la technologie avec la société et les citoyens européens [3].

It will be essential in this respect to give science and technology a higher profile in the media and education in Europe in order to stimulate young people's spirit of enterprise and whet their appetite for science studies and careers. This is also needed to promote dialogue between science and society, in particular through organising major events at regular intervals.
Il sera essentiel, dans cette perspective, de renforcer la présence de la science et de la technologie dans les paysages médiatique et pédagogique européens, pour stimuler l'esprit d'entreprise des jeunes et leur goût pour les études et carrières scientifiques, et de favoriser le dialogue entre science et société, notamment par la tenue à intervalles réguliers d'événements de grande ampleur.

(11) Council Resolution of 26 June 2001 on science and society and on women in science(8), welcoming the work of the Helsinki Group and inviting Member States and the Commission to pursue efforts to promote women in science at national level should be taken into account, in particular as regards the collection of gender-disaggregated statistics in human resources in science and technology and the development of indicators in order to monitor progress towards equality between men and women in European research.
(11) Il convient de tenir compte de la résolution du Conseil du 26 juin 2001 sur la science et la société et sur les femmes dans le monde de la science(8), qui se félicite des travaux du groupe d'Helsinki et invite les États membres et la Commission à poursuivre les efforts entrepris pour promouvoir le rôle des femmes dans le domaine de la science au niveau national, en particulier en ce qui concerne la collecte de statistiques ventilées par sexe sur les ressources humaines dans le domaine des sciences et des technologies et la mise au point d'indicateurs afin de suivre les progrès accomplis dans la recherche européenne en faveur de l'égalité entre les hommes et les femmes.
