* Organise an EU-China Co-operation Forum on the Information Society in April 2002, to include an exhibition of European know-how in technology and services linked to the Information Society, an EU-China conference on the challenges of the Information Society and a series of business meetings, and other events as appropriate.

For this Action Plan, the key target areas have been revised in the light of the Lisbon Summit conclusions and the numerous reactions the Commission has received, especially from the European Parliament and Member States and during the Informal Ministerial Conference on the Information and Knowledge Society held in Lisbon on 10-11 April.
Pour le présent plan d'action, les principaux domaines d'action ont été réexaminés sur la base des conclusions du sommet de Lisbonne et des nombreuses réactions que la Commission a reçues, notamment de la part du Parlement européen et des États membres, et lors de la conférence ministérielle officieuse concernant la société de l'information et de la connaissance qui a eu lieu à Lisbonne les 10 et 11 avril.

All of these issues were further underlined in discussions during the informal Ministerial Conference on the Information and Knowledge Society held in Lisbon on 10-11 April 2000.

As the programming exercise is coming to an end, the Commission will carry out a number of actions to help ensure an efficient use of Structural Funds earmarked for the information society and the knowledge-based economy and for improving synergies between the IST-Programme and the Structural Funds as a follow-up to the conference on "The Information Society and Economic, Social and Territorial Cohesion" in Lyon, in December 2000.

On this basis, promotion of broadband services in rural areas will be considered at the annual i2010 information society conference to be held in Espoo, Finland on 27 and 28 September 2006.

In the case of information on the events organised by the Commission, summary records of the three key events of 2000 were placed on line: the conference on 'sharing responsibility in the decentralised management of the Structural Funds' in June, the conference on 'the evaluation of assistance financed by the Structural Funds' in September and the conference on 'the information society and cohesion' in December.

Calls on the Commission to start up without delay the demonstration projects referred to in the Bangemann report and agreed at the G7 Conference, in order to involve users and service providers and thus stimulate the market; this must have top priority so that pilot programmes for the dissemination of expected applications and activities of the information society may heighten the awareness of the general public;
