– (IT) Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, I, too, would like to remind you as Mr Musacchio did, that in February, this Parliament, together with Mikhail Gorbachev’s World Political Forum, hosted a conference with a meaningful title: ‘Peace with Water’, a conference that produced a memorandum for a world water protocol that deserves serious consideration and was, moreover, supported by all the major political groups in this Parliament, but which seems to have been ignored by the Committee on Development, which drew up this document.

7. welcomes the fact that the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality has expressed an opinion on the Commission's proposal, and emphasises the importance of mainstreaming gender into migration policies; points out, in particular, the importance of ensuring that immigrants entering the EU are aware of the values and existing laws and social conventions on gender equality, so as to avoid situations of discrimination in the host countries' societies which result from a lack cultural awareness;

Recalls, in view of the final report and Recommendations of its Temporary Committee of Enquiry into the Crisis of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, that neither consumers nor service providers are always able to determine which legal regime is applicable to each aspect of their activities, that is, whether the civil law or the regulatory regime of the host or home country applies;

Both sides underscore the importance of continued work to elaborate a Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition and Other Related Materials, Supplementary to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.

[6] This was followed in September by a meeting in Brussels, hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee in co-operation with the Commission, on 'The Role of Civil Society in Promoting Integration' where discussions were based on an opinion of the EESC on this matter.

Among other things, the Protocol strengthens the optional consultative function of the Committee in areas of particular importance for civil society, as listed in the Commission's annual work programme (in particular, the Europe 2020 strategy, and notably sustainable development, deepening the internal market, the fight against poverty, immigration and energy supply).

In 2012, a Protocol on cooperation between the European Commission and the Committee was adopted by both institutions with a view to strengthening the participation of civil society organisations, at national and European levels, in the process of developing the policies of the European Union, and in developing structured dialogue between these organisations and the European institutions.
