We've been involved in sport for 34 years, starting back in Winnipeg in 1964 with the national hockey team; then through the Pan-American Games in 1967; then, as the chairman mentioned, with the Task Force on Sports in 1968; through the development of the Coaching Association, ParticipACTION, the National Sport and Recreation Centre, Hockey Canada, and the Sport Marketing Council; and working with other provincial-level organizations over the last 34 years.

Considers it essential to take additional steps to foster much more exhaustive mutual understanding, for instance by improving the information on the Commission web page and disseminating it in Spanish and Portuguese, including newsgroups and electronic bulletins on the page, and by providing more active support to centres and institutes which are involved in the study of EU-LA relations (OREAL, CELARE, the EU-LA Observatory on Decentralised Cooperation, the Institute of Ibero-American and Portuguese Studies, etc.) or which could play an important role in raising awareness of the true picture in the two regions (the Biarritz Forum, the Goethe-Institut, the Instituto Cervantes, the Carolina Foundation, the British Council, the Alliance Française, etc.);

This meeting with the Presidency and the Commission will involve the following Latin American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, and the Portuguese Minister for Sport, who is this year chairing one of the regions of the Iberian-American Sports Council.

The Spanish Presidency of the European Union and the European Commission will meet today and tomorrow in Lima (Peru) with the Ministers for Sport from Latin America (Iberian-American Sports Council) to tackle together the question of doping and other aspects of sports policy such as violence in sport and the social function of sport.
