Reiterates the importance of improving the accessibility in Atlantic maritime regions, and of increasing movement of persons, goods and services in these regions in order to achieve the aims of the internal market and the objective of cohesion policy, especially by the development of short sea shipping and the highways of the sea;

It is important to improve accessibility in Atlantic maritime regions and increase movement of persons, goods and services in these regions in order to achieve the aims of the internal market and the objective of cohesion policy, especially by the development of short sea shipping and the highways of the sea.

Supports the integration of the remote maritime regions and the islands into the ‘maritime highways’, in order to boost sustainable mobility, intermodality and the internal market; in this context, suggests the development of regional initiatives in the framework of the ‘motorways of the sea’ in European maritime areas of high importance in order to encourage the introduction of new intermodal maritime-based logistics chains in Europe and to enhance the development of maritime commerce; in the same framework, calls on the Commission to launch an impact assessment on the desirability of, and conditions for, establishing more ‘motorways of the sea’;

On May 7, the minister announced the creation of an Internet site that is merely a collection of existing programs, plus three round tables, as part of the 1998 Multimedia and Info-highway International Market, which is currently under way in Montreal.

The Euro Info Centre Network was set up in 1987 by the European Commission mainly to provide Small and Medium Size Firms with essential information about the Internal Market. Today there are about 210 Euro Info Centres spread throughout the 12 Member States, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Island, and 14 Euro Info Correspondence Centres established in some third countries (Poland, Czech Republic, Slowakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slowenia, Malta, Cyprus, Turkey,Morocco,Tunisia,Israel,Jordan,Switzerland).

In order to guarantee an effective and transparent management of the Internal market, the Commission must be aware of where the problems lie and what is the level of enforcement of the Internal market programme : contacts between institutions, especially the Economic and Social Committee, and intermediaries, like the Euro-Info Centres, will be strengthened in order to gain daily experience of the operation of the Internal market.
Pour garantir une gestion efficace et transparente du marché intérieur, la Commission doit savoir où résident les problèmes et quel est le niveau d'application du programme du marché intérieur: il convient de renforcer les contacts entre les institutions, notamment le Comité économique et social, et les intermédiaires, tels que les Euro-Info-Centres, pour développer l'expérience quotidienne du fonctionnement du marché intérieur.

The networks to be set up in the energy, transport and telecommunications sectors will be the real highways of the internal market and will facilitate the integration of the European economies by ensuring easier and less costly transport, better-quality communication services and an energy market open to competition.
Les réseaux, dans les domaines de l'énergie, des transports et des télécommunications, véritables autoroutes du marché intérieur, faciliteront l'intégration des économies européennes en garantissant des transports plus faciles et moins onéreux, des services de communications de meilleure qualité et un approvisionnement énergétique ouvert à la concurrence.
