What the Law Society of New Brunswick proposes may seem like an interim measure, but in fact, we view this recommendation as a long-term solution to the problem all those who support this bill have attempted to address.

Considers European Union initiatives such as the ‘European Capital of Culture’, the ‘European Heritage Label’ and the ‘Iron Curtain Trail’ which need to have significant synergies with projects from the Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes programme (such as the ‘Way of St James’, the Via Francigena or one of the other recognised routes) and the European Institute of Cultural Routes to be necessary in promoting European heritage, contemporary creativity and sustainability in cultural tourism, approaching new consumers and supporting remote and lesser-known regions; calls in this context for closer links with traditional regional cultures and for measures to preserve traditional urban and rural landscapes; welcomes programmes such as EDEN and NECSTouR due to their potential for boosting sustainable economic development;

6. If an operator proposes a new initiative that will provide a service, limited to one route, where none exists, the competent authority may award the exclusive right to provide this new service directly to that operator, provided that the service will not be subject to financial compensation under the terms of any public service contract.

Lastly, I will say to Mr Bouwman that, in this new proposal, we incorporate not only the North-south routes, which are the ones that have essentially been included in the other trans-European networks, because they were the most necessary, but also the East-west routes, above all the basic Paris-Stuttgart-Vienna route, which will eventually provide a link with Budapest; we also incorporate the Danube and its best communication with the Rhine, creating a south-east-northeast route which crosses the whole of the Union.
