Gordon O'Connor (Minister of National Defence, CPC): Mr. Speaker, the answer is as follows: a) During its deployment in Afghanistan, between October 2001 and May 2006, the Canadian Forces have participated in 404 restoration or development projects. b) 332 projects are deemed completed. c) Approximately 72 projects are at various stages of completion. d) The nature of these projects includes: community water access; medical facility renovation; medical equipment provision; medical supplies provision; road construction; bridges construction; school construction; school supplies; fire hall construction; support to non-governmental organizations; small business case development; widow training programs; water infrastructure; sanitation projects; provision of quality of life supplies; support to Afghan national security forces; support to orphanages; playground construction and renovation; miscellaneous. e) The Canadian Forces projects were centered in and around Kabul and Kandahar city areas. f) Though not all projects are surveyed on a regular basis to confirm their serviceability there is no evidence or reports of any of these projects being attacked by insurgents.

Gordon O'Connor (ministre de la Défense nationale, PCC): Monsieur le Président, les réponses sont les suivantes: a) Pendant leur déploiement en Afghanistan, entre octobre 2001 et mai 2006, les Forces canadiennes ont participé à 404 projets de rénovation ou de développement. b) On estime que 332 de ces projets sont complétés. c) Quelque 72 de ces projets en sont à diverses étapes d’accomplissement. d) Voici ce en quoi consistent ces projets : accès à l’eau pour la collectivité, rénovation d’installations médicales, fourniture d’équipements médicaux, fourniture de matériel médical, construction d’une route, construction de ponts, construction d’une école, fourniture de matériel scolaire, construction d’une caserne de pompiers, appui à des organisations non gouvernementales, aide aux petites entreprises, programme de formation pour les veuves, aqueduc, projets sanitaires, fourniture d’articles liés à la qualité de vie, appui aux forces de sécurité nationale d’Afghanistan, aide à des orphelinats, construction et rénovation de terrains de jeux et autres. e) Les projets des Forces canadiennes ont été concentrés à l’intérieur et aux alentours de Kaboul et de Kandahar. f) Bien que tous les projets ne soient pas révisés sur une base régulière afin de s’assurer de leur bon fonctionnement, il n’y a aucune preuve ni aucun compte rendu indiquant que l’un de ces projets a été attaqué par des insurgés.

Strengthened governance of health sector through: Establishment of round-tables in communal health centers of St Marc where 90 percent of organizations fighting HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections coordinate their activities; trained 70 percent of medical staff of communal health centers targeted Significant increase in prevention based on number of screening tests given and communities taking in people living with HIV/AIDS Repairs and equipping of health centers in Jeremie, Saint Marc, Lachappelle, Aquin, Port Salut, Jean Rabel, Petit Goave and Jacmel.

Following applications by scientific institutes from Ukraine, the USA, Japan, Russia and international bodies such as the UNESCO Biotechnological Educational and Training Center, the World Organization for Animal Health and the von Kármán Institute for Fluid Dynamics, the Committee agreed to the following requests for participation in individual COST Actions:
