The government's lack of support for this very reasonable and limited recommendation from the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration is another indication of its failure to appreciate the importance of family reunification and of keeping families together, of not separating families in Canada.

In its opinion on the right to family reunification, the European Economic and Social Committee (ESC) emphasises the extent to which family reunification is both a right and a social, personal and cultural instrument to favour the integration of third country nationals (Rapporteur: Mrs CASSINA, Group II, Italy).
