After an in-depth investigation (see IP/12/44) opened in 2012 the Commission has approved aid granted by Sweden to the operator of Västerås Airport (VFAB) in the form of capital injections from its public shareholders (principally the City of Västerås) and under national scheme for aid to regional airports.

In line with these principles, the Commission has fully approved the state aid granted to the airports of Frankfurt-Hahn and Saarbrücken in Germany, Alghero in Italy and Västerås in Sweden.

Brussels, 25 January 2012 - The European Commission will investigate whether financial arrangements between public authorities and the airports of Niederrhein-Weeze, Altenburg-Nobitz (both in Germany), Pau (France) and Västerås (Sweden), as well as rebates and marketing agreements concluded between these airports and some of the airlines using them, are in line with EU State aid rules.

Västerås is a regional airport around 100 km from Stockholm.

Several of these places have important and expanding airports (in particular Västerås and Stockholm Skavsta outside Nyköping), or major ports (e.g. Gävle, Västerås and Halmstad) or are responsible for guarding long sections of the border (e.g. Gäddede and Vittjärn).
