Its importance is reflected in the EU Treaty and taken up in the Constitution, which challenges the Union “ to work for the sustainable development of Europe based on balanced economic growth and price stability, a highly competitive social market economy, aiming at full employment and social progress, and a high level of protection and improvement of the quality of the environment ”.
Son importance se reflète dans le traité sur l’Union européenne et il est inscrit dans la Constitution qui appelle l’Union à « œuvrer pour le développement durable de l'Europe fondé sur une croissance économique équilibrée et sur la stabilité des prix, une économie sociale de marché hautement compétitive, qui tend au plein emploi et au progrès social, et à un niveau élevé de protection et d'amélioration de la qualité de l'environnement ».
