There's a National Marine and Industrial Council, as many members know, which is comprised of deputy ministers of Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, and Transport Canada; an associate deputy minister from Industry Canada; and nine industry representatives selected from the chief executive officers of Canadian companies only.

Global problems such as pollution of the sea, protecting the forests, the preservation of endangered plants and animal species and global warming (the greenhouse effect) receive the strongest mandate, with a high level of support also given to issues related to Development, such as helping Third World countries to protect their environment, or encouraging industrial development in Third World countries which does not damage the environment.
