We have five bands involved in the aboriginal groups that work specifically in the oil sands, and we now have Dave Tuccaro, who is the richest aboriginal in Canada—I think has somewhere over $100 million in personal wealth—and we have a lot of aboriginals who work in the oil sands at Syncrude and Suncor.

Aboriginal Affairs also works with first nations, the National Aboriginal Circle Against Family Violence, the provinces and the territories, and other government departments, such as the Department of Justice and Status of Women Canada to coordinate family violence prevention programming.

Reiterates its concern that Canada still imposes a visa requirement on citizens of the Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria, and calls for that requirement to be lifted as speedily as possible; notes that the visa requirement for Czech citizens has been introduced by the Canadian Government in response to an influx of Roma people into Canada, and therefore calls on the Member States adequately to address the situation of the Roma people in Europe; in this regard, welcomes the opening of a visa office in the Canadian Embassy in Prague and the establishment of an expert working group on this issue, and hopes that the promised comprehensive review of the Canadian refugee system will lead to the visa requirement being lifted;

Two points were always raised: first, there had to be some kind of instrument for representation of aboriginal people, the working group is a reflection of that; and second, the traditional knowledge had to be incorporated.

Establishing the Panel, the Minister stated: " The 1999 Marshall decision has had significant implications for the communities in the Miramichi Bay area and has underscored the need for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal groups to work together to ensure social harmony and continued economic prosperity in the area" .
