Mr. Speaker, today is the 21st day of the hunger strike of Iranian political prisoner Nasrin Sotoudeh, the face, symbol and embodiment of the human rights struggle in Iran; a leader in the struggle for women's rights amidst the persistent and pervasive assault against women; a leader in the struggle against child executions, while Iran has executed more minors per capita than any other country in the world; and a courageous lawyer for political prisoners, while Iran has imprisoned more than 60 lawyers for their human rights work, until she became a political prisoner herself.

Strongly condemns the death sentences and executions in Iran, in particular those imposed or carried out on juvenile offenders and minors, and protests vehemently against the execution in Iran on 11 October 2009 of Behnoud Shojaee; urges the Iranian authorities to respect the internationally recognised legal safeguards with regard to minors, such as the ICCPR and the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, and, in particular, not to execute Safar Angooti and Abbas Hosseini;

Condemns the death penalty as such and in particular death sentences passed against and executions of juvenile offenders and minors; calls on Iran to apply the recently adopted UNGA resolution on a moratorium on executions with the ultimate goal of abolishing the death penalty; recalls Iran's international commitments, specifically the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, both clearly prohibiting the execution of minors or people who were convicted of crimes committed while they were minors; calls on the Iranian authorities urgently to amend the penal code in order to transform the moratorium on stoning into a definitive ban;
