Up to now, the Istanbul Convention is the most far-reaching legal instrument on violence against women and has the potential of effectively preventing and combating violence against women in Europe and beyond. Decisive action is needed in terms of signing and ratifying, and - most importantly - implementing the Council of Europe’s Convention on Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence by individual states and by the European Union.

The UN, in 2003, obtained two significant results in the fight against corruption. The first event was the entry into force of the Palermo Convention against Transnational Organised Crime, on 29 September 2003; the second was the conclusions of the preparatory work for the new UN Convention against Corruption, which will be signed on 9/10 December 2003 in Mexico.

The next important step in this fight against violence came in 1979. The United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women was one of the first international agreements to recognise that the problem of violence and discrimination against women merited particular attention.
