A number of international organisations have direct competence in dealing with issues relating to biotechnology - biosafety is addressed by the Cartagena Protocol, biodiversity by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), agriculture by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), intellectual property rights and technology transfer by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and World Trade Organisation (WTO), trade by the WTO, risk analysis of foods derived from modern biotechnology in Codex Alimentarius under the World Health Organisation (WHO)/FAO, plant protection under the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), and the development of consensus documents by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The IAEA together with the World Health Organisation, the Food and Agricultural Organisation, the International Labour Organisation, the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the Pan-American Health Organisation have revised the International Basic Safety Standards in the light of the ICRP's new Publication 103, and the Commission has informed the IAEA of its decision of 6 August 2012 to co-sponsor that document on behalf of the European Atomic Energy Community.

The Seventh Review Conference encouraged the States Parties, in the context of Article X of the BTWC, to continue strengthening existing international organisations and networks, in particular those of the WHO, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).
La septième conférence d’examen a encouragé les États parties, dans le contexte de l’article X de la BTWC, à continuer de renforcer les organisations internationales et les réseaux internationaux existants, en particulier ceux de l’OMS, de l’Organisation des Nations unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO), de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé animale (OIE) et de la Convention internationale pour la protection des végétaux (CIPV).

2. Where a plant protection product is not authorised in a Member State because no application for an authorisation has been submitted in that Member State, official or scientific bodies involved in agricultural activities or professional agricultural organisations may apply, with the consent of the authorisation holder, for an authorisation for the same plant protection product, the same use and under the same agricultural practices in that Member State under the mutual recognition procedure referred to in paragraph 1.
2. Furthermore, the Commission shall transmit list of non-cooperating states to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and to Regional Fisheries Management Organisations for the purposes of enhancing co-operation between the European Community and these organisations aimed at preventing, deterring and eliminating IUU fishing.

7. Takes the view that the proposed exercise should focus first and foremost on the very aims of the multilateral trade system, to ensure that they are mutually supportive and consistent with the action being taken by other international organisations; considers in particular that the coordination of WTO activities with those of the International Labour Organisation ( ILO), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Kyoto programme on renewable energy, should be strengthened, in order to ensure greater consistency in the decision-making process of those organisations; in this connection, believes that the ILO should be granted observer status and that a committee on trade and decent employment should be set up modelled on the Committee on Trade and Environment;
7. estime que l'exercice proposé devrait porter en premier lieu sur les finalités mêmes du système commercial multilatéral, dans un souci de cohérence avec l'action menée par d'autres organisations internationales; estime en particulier nécessaire de renforcer la coordination des activités de l'OMC avec celles de l'OIT, de l'Organisation des Nations unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture (FAO), du Programme des Nations unies pour l'environnement (PNUE), de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS), de la Conférence des Nations unies sur le commerce et le développement (CNUCED) et du Protocole de Kyoto sur les énergies renouvelables, afin de garantir une plus grande cohérence du processus de prise de décision de ces organisations; est d'avis, dans ce cadre, d'octroyer à l'OIT un statut d'observateur et d'instituer un comité "commerce et travail décent" sur le modèle du comité "commerce et environnement";

In order to ensure respect for the positive law of the various Member States, it should be recalled that the objective of the single CMO is not to modify existing national mechanisms or to call into question Member States’ jurisdiction in this area, and that agricultural organisations of an interbranch nature are necessarily made up of organisations representing both agricultural production and – depending on the requirements and characteristics of the product or group of products concerned – trade in and/or processing of agricultural produce.
Afin de garantir le respect du droit positif des différents États membres, il convient de rappeler que l'OCM unique n'a pas pour objet de modifier les mécanismes nationaux existants, ni de remettre en cause la compétence des États membres en la matière, et que les organisations agricoles à caractère interprofessionnel sont nécessairement composées d'organisations représentant, d'une part, la production agricole et, d'autre part, – selon les besoins et les caractéristiques du produit ou groupe de produits concernés – le commerce et/ou la transformation de produits agricoles.

19. Calls on the Member States to encourage the balanced representation of women farmers (at local and European level) i n the various decision-making bodies at both occupational and government level (professional agricultural organisations, sectoral organisations, agricultural cooperatives, rural women NGOs, Chambers of Agriculture, trade-unions, Ministries of Agriculture etc.) and to cooperate with local government bodies to encourage and support the cultural and social life of women in the countryside (establishment of associations – encouragement of initiatives);
19. invite les États membres à encourager une représentation équilibrée des agricultrices (à l'échelon local et européen) dans les différents organismes et départements de prise de décision, tant au niveau professionnel qu'au niveau public (organisations agricoles professionnelles, organisations sectorielles, coopératives agricoles, ONG s'occupant des femmes en milieu rural, chambres d'agriculture, syndicats, ministères de l'Agriculture, entre autres choses) et à collaborer avec les collectivités locales afin d'encourager et de renforcer la vie culturelle et sociale des femmes de la campagne (création d'associations – encouragement d'initiatives);

In the course of implementing the programme, cooperation with third countries and with international organisations competent in the sphere of public health, in particular the World Health Organisation, the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, or able to have an impact on public health such as the World Trade Organisation and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation shall be encouraged in accordance with the procedure laid down in Article 9(3).
