The Chair: Ladies and gentlemen, since we're trying to come up with solutions to better the viability of the airline industry in Canada, one of the solutions that has been recommended is that we ask Industry Canada how best we can bring to the attention of the travelling public, not only in Canada but the United States, how they can assist in getting Canadians back to having assurance in the airline industry that it's safe, it's compatible with the transborder traffic, that it's not only a great means of tourism, but that it's vital to the future of Canada.

Whereas the U.S. government, which is generally disinclined to provide government assistance to the private sector, has provided substantial support to its airline industry; whereas Canadian airlines have been substantially affected by the tragic events in New York and Washington; whereas air transportation in Canada is essential to the population — in remote regions in particular — and to our businesses; and whereas the over 50 per cent reduction in the activities of Canada's airlines is jeopardizing financial stability throughout our economy; therefore, I invite my colleagues in the Senate and in the government to provide assistance similar to the assistance provided by the U.S. government to its industry, both to preserve a Canadian infrastructure and to reassure the public in general and the workers in this industry in particular.

Instead of this crisis management, knee-jerk reaction that the government is taking now, we could have actually provided a framework to the airline industry to allow restructuring to occur as opposed to having the airline industry and entities within the airlines industry, in this case Canadian and Air Canada, actually having to come up with proposals.
Au lieu de recourir à ce mode de gestion ponctuelle et réactive que le gouvernement privilégie aujourd'hui, nous aurions pu mettre en place un plan d'action qui aurait permis à l'industrie du transport aérien de se restructurer, au lieu d'obliger cette industrie et d'autres entités, comme c'est le cas aujourd'hui notamment pour Canadian Airlines et Air Canada, à nous proposer des solutions.

In closing I would like to say that members on all sides of the House are very much in favour of ensuring that whatever comes out of the Air Canada-Canadian Airlines trade war, which is what it is, we will be left at the end of the day with a strong airline industry which will be profitable and able to continue to take on competition and win in the aggressive airline transportation industry.
