During negotiations between the German Government and the parties to the 'Jahrhundertvertrag` as part of the 1989 'Kohlerunde` (round of coal talks), the obligatory minimum amount to be purchased was set for the last five-year period (1991-95) at 40,9 million tonnes coal equivalent (tce) (or approximately 41,5 million tonnes of hard coal) a year, of which 34,4 million tce was for the electricity-generating utilities and 6,5 million tce for autogenerators.
