In its statement of 27 March 2002, the Presidency welcomed the acquittal of Safiya Husseini on behalf of the European Union, but also reiterated the Union’s position regarding the death penalty and urged the Nigerian Government to continue to make every effort to abolish the death penalty and to prevent all forms of cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment.
