Let me refresh our minds about European history: if we want to create a single market effectively based on the principle of the free movement of people, goods, capital and services; if we want to avoid economic nationalism as a backlash against economic crisis; and if we want to be the most competitive economy and to boost competitiveness and create more jobs and growth, then our first and utmost priority should be to lift these unjustifiable barriers to the free movement of workers imposed on Romania, Bulgaria and the ten new Member States, which are based on irrational fears that have not proven justified.
Permettez-moi un petit rappel concernant l’histoire européenne: si nous voulons créer un marché unique qui, de fait, soit fondé sur les principes de libre circulation des personnes, des biens, des capitaux et des services, si nous voulons barrer la route au nationalisme économique comme réponse à la crise, si nous voulons devenir l’économie la plus compétitive, donner un coup de fouet à la compétitivité et générer davantage d’emploi et de croissance, alors notre toute première priorité doit être de lever les obstacles injustifiables à la libre circulation des travailleurs imposés à la Roumanie, à la Bulgarie et aux dix nouveaux États membres, car ces restrictions reposent sur des peurs irrationnelles qui se sont avérées infondées.
