In the natural state the growing calf at pasture with its mother obtains a high proportion of its protein, essential fatty acids, minerals and vitamins from milk. This bypasses the rumen and is directed through the oesophageal groove directly into the abomasum where it is digested in the same way as milk or other foods of animal origin would be digested by a pig or human.
